Meet Sheila

Whether violence is seen, heard or experienced, it impacts the health and well being of children and their families.

My name is Sheila and I would like to share my story with you. I am survivor of childhood sexual and physical abuse and as an adult, I found myself in a violent relationship. My daughters' father was verbally and physically abusive to me. Due to the abuse, I became chronically depressed and could not parent my daughters. They started acting out as a result of our home environment. They lost respect for me because they witnessed how their father treated me. My daughters saw and felt everything that was going on in our home.

I always wanted my girls to be strong and have a happy life without violence. I had to make a change. I finally left their father and called Safe From the Start for help. For over a year, my daughters and I worked hard with the Safe From the Start therapists to get beyond the trauma we had experienced. It was not easy, but through therapy, we did heal.

My daughters and I learned new ways to communicate and how to express our feelings through art and poetry. I learned how to properly parent them and became the mom I always wanted to be, the mom my daughters needed. Through Safe From the Start therapy services my daughters and I formed a healthy relationship and got our confidence and mutual respect back.

Investing in a successful future for children begins with family. I ask you to support Safe From the Start this giving season. This critical program brings possibility and hope to others who are in the same situation as I was. I am proud of who I have become as a person and as a mother. I am even more proud of who my daughters have become. We would not be where we are today without Safe From the Start.

Thank you,

Safe From the Start Client

P.S. Family violence can be prevented, only if programs like Safe From the Start exist. Please support CAC and their Safe From the Start program by making a donation today.
