The recent public attention surrounding high‑profile documents related to child exploitation has renewed focus on the pervasive realities of child sexual abuse and its lifelong impact. While CAC does not comment on specific cases or individuals, moments like this underscore the importance of our mission: to support children and families in healing from trauma through compassionate, coordinated and culturally responsive services.
Child sexual exploitation occurs when an adult uses power, control or manipulation to involve a child in sexual activity for the adult’s benefit - whether emotional, physical, social or financial. A child is never responsible for an adult’s actions because a child cannot consent to sexual activity, regardless of circumstance or perceived maturity.
In addition, the effects of child sexual abuse and exploitation can extend well into adulthood, influencing emotional regulation, mental health, relationships, physical well‑being and a survivor’s sense of safety and self‑worth. It is also common for survivors to delay disclosing abuse, sometimes for years or even decades, due to fear, shame, trauma or the power dynamics involved. Delayed disclosure does not diminish the validity of a survivor’s experience.
As a CAC, we stand with all survivors. We remain dedicated to providing a safe, child‑centered environment where young people are heard, supported and empowered while working with our partners to build a community where every child can thrive.
