August is National Make-a-Will Month. For many busy people, highlighting this task is just the reminder they need to take action. While it may sound unpleasant or complicated, it’s much simpler than one might expect. Plus, the benefits are significant.

  • A will is an important legal document that all adults should have. It gives you control over your assets after you pass away.

  • A will simplifies things after your death. It states exactly who receives your property and can prevent family conflict over your wishes. If you have minor children or pets, you can specify the legal guardian (children) or caretaker (pets).

  • A will helps you create your legacy. No one lives forever, but you can still positively impact this world after you leave it by donating to charity in your will. You can give cash, real estate, other property, stocks and more. This generosity costs you nothing while you’re alive but empowers the charity for years after you’re gone.

This August, with the support of inaugural ambassadors Bonnie and Herb Horn, CAC is launching Guardians of Hope. When you join the Horns and commit to a legacy gift for CAC, you become a Guardian of Hope for future generations of children. Your generosity enables CAC to continue to bring hope, help and healing to young abuse survivors and their families for years to come. Visit the Guardians of Hope webpage to learn more or request a call from Bonnie and Herb.

Even if you already have a will, you can update it with your legacy gift intent for CAC. (Experts recommend reviewing your existing will every three to five years or after major life events like marriage or the birth of a child.)

If you still need to make a will, use August to check this task off your To Do list. Visit an estate attorney or take advantage of the many low-cost/no-cost options online that can help you write your will. FreeWill is a Development team favorite, and more articles and free will-making tools are available at freewill.com.
